If you or someone you love has recently been charged with a DUI or DWI in North Carolina, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about what comes next. Understanding the process can help you take the right steps quickly — and avoid making things worse.
At Community Intervention & Educational Services (The COOL Program), we work with individuals across North Carolina every day who are navigating the DUI process. Here’s what you need to know.
Step 1: You Will Likely Need a DUI Assessment
One of the first things the court will require after a DUI charge in North Carolina is a substance abuse assessment. This evaluation helps determine the level of treatment or education you may need. It is conducted by a certified substance abuse professional and the results are submitted directly to the court or your probation officer.
At CIES, we offer same-day DUI assessments in Winston-Salem for clients throughout North Carolina, surrounding states, and out-of-state individuals who need services accepted by North Carolina courts. Our assessment fee is $116 and includes your driving record.
Step 2: You May Be Required to Complete ADETS
Depending on your assessment results, the court may require you to complete ADETS — Alcohol Drug Education Traffic School. This is a structured education program designed to help individuals understand the dangers of impaired driving and make better decisions going forward.
ADETS classes at CIES are offered monthly. The fee is $185 plus $25 for the required course book. Virtual attendance is available for added convenience.
Step 3: Follow All Court Requirements Promptly
One of the biggest mistakes people make after a DUI charge is waiting too long to complete their requirements. Courts in North Carolina take compliance seriously. The sooner you complete your assessment and any required classes, the better your outcome is likely to be.
Here are the most common court requirements after a DUI in North Carolina:
- Substance abuse assessment and evaluation
- ADETS or other court-ordered education classes
- Alcohol or GPS monitoring (such as SCRAM)
- Regular check-ins with a probation officer
- Proof of program completion submitted to the court
Step 4: Understand Your Monitoring Requirements
In some cases, especially for repeat offenders or cases involving high blood alcohol levels, the court may order SCRAM alcohol monitoring or GPS tracking. SCRAM is a device worn on the ankle that continuously monitors alcohol consumption through perspiration. GPS monitoring tracks your location and ensures compliance with any travel restrictions.
CIES is a certified SCRAM provider serving Winston-Salem and the surrounding areas. We can help you get set up quickly and ensure you remain compliant throughout your monitoring period.
Step 5: Out-of-State Clients Are Welcome
If you live outside of North Carolina but were charged with a DUI in the state, you still need to complete a North Carolina-approved assessment. CIES offers out-of-state DUI reviews and assessments for $300, and many of our services are available virtually, so you don’t have to travel.
