There are moments in life when you find yourself standing in the middle of a storm you did not create. You did everything right. You showed up with integrity, with purpose, and with genuine care for the people around you. And yet somehow, you find yourself being questioned, challenged, or judged by the very systems and people that were supposed to support you.
If you are reading this today and you are in that place — we see you. We understand. And we want you to know that you are not alone.
When Judgment Comes
Judgment is one of the most painful human experiences. It does not matter whether it comes from a stranger, an institution, or someone you trusted — the weight of being mischaracterized, misunderstood, or treated unjustly can feel crushing. It can make you question yourself, your purpose, and your path.
But here is what we have learned: judgment says far more about the one doing the judging than it does about you.
Maya Angelou said it best — “You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies. You may trod me in the very dirt, but still, like dust, I’ll rise.”
Those words are not just poetry. They are a declaration. They are a reminder that no matter what has been said about you, no matter what has been done to you, your story is not over. Your purpose has not been cancelled. Your value has not been diminished.
What We Have Learned at CIES
At Community Intervention & Educational Services — The COOL Program — we have walked through our own difficult season. We have faced challenges that tested our resolve, our faith, and our commitment to the community we serve. There were moments when the path forward felt uncertain. There were moments when the weight of it all felt heavy beyond measure.
But we kept showing up. We kept serving. We kept standing in integrity. And through it all, our faith reminded us that purpose does not bow to opposition.
We are still here. Still serving. Still standing. And we rise.
Moving Forward with Purpose
If you are going through a difficult season right now — whether it is a legal matter, a family challenge, a personal struggle, or an unfair situation at work or in your community — here are some things that have helped us move forward:
1. Hold on to your truth. When others try to rewrite your story, hold tightly to what you know to be true about yourself. Your character is built in the moments when no one is watching, not in the opinions of those who do not know your heart.
2. Surround yourself with people who see you clearly. Isolation is the enemy of healing. Find your community — the people who remind you of who you are when the noise gets loud. At CIES we believe deeply in the power of community and connection.
3. Let faith be your anchor. Whatever your spiritual foundation, lean into it during difficult times. For us, faith has been the steady ground beneath our feet when everything else felt uncertain. It has reminded us that we are held, guided, and not forgotten.
4. Keep moving forward. One of the hardest things to do when you are in pain is to keep going. But movement — even small movement — is resistance. Every day you show up is a declaration that what tried to stop you did not win.
5. Trust that justice has its own timeline. Not everything gets resolved on our preferred schedule. But we believe that truth has a way of rising to the surface. What is done in darkness eventually comes to light. Do your part. Walk in integrity. And trust the process.
A Word to Our Community
To every client, partner, attorney, probation officer, and community member who has stood with us — thank you. Your trust means everything. You have reminded us why we do this work and why we will never stop.
To anyone who is in a difficult season right now — whether you have been court-ordered, whether you are fighting an unfair system, whether you are trying to rebuild after a mistake or after being wronged — CIES is here. We do not judge you. We walk with you. We believe in your ability to rise.
Because that is what we do here. We rise together.
“Still, like dust, I’ll rise.” — Maya Angelou
At Community Intervention & Educational Services (The COOL Program) we believe in second chances, in resilience, and in the power of community. If you or someone you love needs support, we are here.
